Joseph Ratzinger has visited the Holy Land at least twice before.
In February 1975 he was part of a study delegation from the Bavarian Catholic Academy, with Cardinal Dopfner of Munich; and the second time in February 1994, when -- accompanied by Josef Clemens, his private secretary -- he attended an international religious conference to present a paper.
